So I put together this list of top Halloween movie classics and what not! (Based on mine and the people I asked).
What is Halloween going to be like if you’re not going to sit down all cuddled up with a hot cup of tea and watch at least some of these movies. I know it always puts me in the Halloween spirit and brings me back to my childhood! (aaaaand because you know Christmas is soon to come after Halloween he he).
#1 – Hocus Pocus (1993) – A Halloween classic!
Now there is a Part 2 to Hocus Pocus but I’m just sticking to the originals! So if you haven’t seen Hocus Pocus (shame on you) then there is a little background information.
More than 300 years ago, 3 witches were sentenced to die in Salem, Massachusetts and a boy was turned into a cat (a black cat, naturally). Now it’s Halloween, and the witches (who fly on [I kid you not] vacuum cleaners) are back. This time, they’ve got their eyes on immortal life and have turned their wrath on trick-or-treaters and it’s up to the 300-year-old cat to save the day.
I mean.. doesn’t it sound great?!
Ok moving on ….. ?
#2 – Halloweentown (1998)
There’s also two parts to this film but once again, sticking to the originals!
This comedy-adventure follows Marnie and her younger siblings as they return with their estranged grandmother, a good witch (Debbie Reynolds), to her home in Halloweentown, where witches, goblins, vampires and the like lead very normal lives. On her 13th birthday, Marnie learns that she comes from a witch family and that she too is a witch. She also discovers that an evil force is plotting to take over Halloweentown, and she must help her mother and grandmother to save the day. Now if you are a bit younger this might be a bit frightening but this movie will definitely not fail to crack a smile out of you! Now go go go!
#3 – The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Who doesn’t love this movie? Jack Skellington, the pumpkin king of Halloween Town, is tired of the same old thing every year. He wanders into the woods and finds some holiday trees and each has a town in it. He goes to the Christmas one and finds himself in Christmas Town. He likes the idea, tells the town to the citizens and they decide to make their own Christmas with their own twist. So much fun to watch!
#4 – Beetlejuice (1988)
This isn’t one I have personally watched (yes I’m disappointing in myself).
So Beetlejuice.. This is the story of Adam and Barbara who live in a beautiful house in New England. One day while driving home they are involved in a terrible auto accident. They manage to walk home only to discover later that they have died and now haunt their house. When their house is purchased by an out of state family, they feel their home is threatened by the over-the-top artists wife and real-estate idea-man husband. Their only relief is the Gothic daughter of the family. Their attempts at scaring the family out of the house are ignored or laughed at. Finally they fall to the temptation to use the people-exorcizer Beetle Juice. When they find his tactics too dangerous, they attempt to contain him and save the family they were trying to boot.
#5 – The Addams Family! (1991) Gets me so excited every-time.
Now this is one of my personal favorites! It’s not specified as a Halloween movie exactly but hey, It fits the criteria! I haven’t seen it in years now which really makes me sad, but I can’t wait to sit down and watch it again this Halloween! The Addams Family is sort of a morbid movie ( just their lifestyle) so if your’e into that even better!
So basically the movie is Inspired by the cartoon characters of Charles Addams and based on the classic 1960s television series, THE ADDAMS FAMILY re-introduces the world to the Addamses, a ghoulishly demented family who embraces the morbid side of life. The Addams clan includes cigar-smoking, child-like dad Gomez (Raul Julia); elegant, vampish mom Morticia (Anjelica Huston); weird son Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) and somber, frighteningly sadistic daughter Wednesday (Christina Ricci). Living in the mansion with them are Grandmama (Judith Malina), Lurch the butler (Carel Struycken), and the ever-present Thing, a free-standing hand that has no body but possesses a personality of its own. After hearing Gomez pining for his estranged brother, the beloved Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd), the Addamses’ attorney cooks up a scheme to steal the family fortune. As a result, the family gets caught up in a swindle full of misadventures and ghoulish fun. Get watchin’!
#6 – Edward Scissorhands (1990) (Eeeeeeeek!)
Now guys, this is another one of my all time favorite movies. Once again it isn’t classified as a ‘Halloween movie’ but it is weird and ..well weird ha. The title of the movie pretty much gives away what the movie is about but here’s a little summary anyway…
In a castle high on top of a hill lives an inventor’s greatest creation – Edward, a near-complete person. The creator died before he could finish Edward’s hands; instead, he is left with metal scissors for hands. Since then, he has lived alone, until a kind lady called Peg discovers him and welcomes him into her home. At first, everyone welcomes him into the community, but soon things begin to take a change for the worse. I’ll give something away .. he falls in love.. Sounds like a love story to me!
#7 – Donny Darco (2001) (This is on the scary side)
Ok guys so this is more of a horror film, if you’re under 16 don’t watch this, or at least don’t watch it without your parents consent (parents, this goes out to you!).
So… Donnie Darko doesn’t get along too well with his family, his teachers and his classmates; but he does manage to find a sympathetic friend in Gretchen, who agrees to date him. He has a compassionate psychiatrist, who discovers hypnosis is the means to unlock hidden secrets. His other companion may not be a true ally. Donnie has a friend named Frank – a large bunny which only Donnie can see. When an engine falls off a plane and destroys his bedroom, Donnie is not there. Both the event, and Donnie’s escape, seem to have been caused by supernatural events. Donnie’s mental illness, if such it is, may never allow him to find out for sure.
#8 – Harry Potter! Which one? ALL OF THEM!
There is a lot of Harry Potter movies but once again.. at least watch the first original this Halloween! So you’re probably thinking.. ehhh? This isn’t a Halloween movie, what are you talking about? SO? It doesn’t matter, its Harry Potter? Its magic, wizardry, wands and unicorns? What more do you need for Halloween? I know this isn’t classified as a Halloween movie but it fits!
So if you’re the 1% of the worlds population that hasn’t seen Harry potter, here is what it’s about! Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is the first film in the Harry Potter series based on the novels by J.K. Rowling. It is the tale of Harry Potter, an ordinary 11-year-old boy serving as a sort of slave for his aunt and uncle who learns that he is actually a wizard and has been invited to attend the Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry is snatched away from his mundane existence by Hagrid, the grounds keeper for Hogwarts, and quickly thrown into a world completely foreign to both him and the viewer. Famous for an incident that happened at his birth, Harry makes friends easily at his new school. He soon finds, however, that the wizarding world is far more dangerous for him than he would have imagined, and he quickly learns that not all wizards are ones to be trusted.
This is the end of my list and this is the beginning of your to-do list this Halloween, get watchin’!
