Chemical and Biomedical Sciences are two very rapidly developing fields in the Sciences. They’re both huge industries in Ireland and abroad. The fields are involved in the creation and quality control of them, as well as research and development of new drugs.
Chemical scientists and engineers deal with an application of chemistry with mathematics and convert raw materials and chemicals into a useful and valuable form. As well as creating existing materials it is also concerned with breaking new ground to develop new techniques and materials to further a variety of fields.
They design and maintain the chemical processes that are used in large scale manufacturing and providing modern high quality materials that are needed in an industrial economy. The scientists and engineers affect a number of areas like the oil industry, where they supervise a refinery, cosmetics, in which they improve the longevity of the progress, and many others.
A number of high profile companies have activities in Ireland like Pfizer, Merck and GSK.
Biomedical Science is the combination of both Biology and Medicine to improve the health of both humans and animals. The field applies a strict scientific approach to healthcare.
Many Biomedical Scientists are also medical doctors. In their research they focus on advancing theoretical knowledge by examining and investigating samples of tissue and body fluids to diagnose diseases and monitor treatments.
Biomedical Engineers often work close alongside Scientists. They apple the theoretical knowledge to focus on improvements to solutions for patient care. They bring engineering techniques to the fields of medicine. This combined with the medical and biological sciences helps improve quality of life for the general public.
It is a relatively new discipline and as such a lot of the work is in research and development across the likes of bioinformatics, medical imagine, biomechanics, and 3-d modelling.
BioPharmaChem Ireland will influence, support and represent the sector in realising its ambition by bringing together all relevant stakeholders in the State, namely: industry, the government, the research community and the public at large to effectively communicate the unique attractiveness of Ireland as a leading location for the supply and development of pharmaceutical products.
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is the national foundation for investment in scientific and engineering research. SFI invests in academic researchers and research teams who are most likely to generate new knowledge, leading edge technologies and competitive enterprises in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
