CSO Central Statistics Office Competition Apps4Gaps

The Central Statistics Office (CSO) is pleased to have launched three statistically-based competitions for young people.

These three CSO competitions take place annually and are aimed at encouraging participants to work as a team and make use of statistics and statistical methods. The John Hooper Medal for Statistics is a Statistical Poster competition for students, aimed at encouraging the analysis, interpretation and communication of statistics or statistical information.  The APPS4GAPS competition is an App design competition for students and non-students. The competition is aimed at encouraging participants to create an application using freely available Open Data.


This is a reminder that registration for the Apps4Gaps competition closes on the 27th of January 2017. Entries must be submitted by the 7th of April 2017. 
Apps4Gaps is an international competition aimed at encouraging people to develop ideas and create applications utilising the Open Data freely available on the National Open Data Portal: http://data.gov.ie. These apps could benefit society in such areas as transport, housing, planning, education, communications and health.  In the process, participants will be encouraged to work as a team; learn or increase their skills in computer science; utilise the opportunities presented by Open Data; and be challenged in creating technologies such as mobile apps.
The international competition is open to teams of two or three participants.  Teachers / lecturers must register student teams otherwise the assigned team leader registers the team.
Apps can be submitted in two entry categories:
     Working App (Student): Submission of a fully developed app
     Working App (Open): Submission of a fully developed app

The prizes for successful contestants are as follows:
> The best overall working app will be awarded the Alice Perry Medal

> Working App (Student) prizes:
– First place prize – €1,500 to the team
– Second place prize – €1,000 to the team
– Third place prize – €500 to the team

> Working App (Open) Prizes:
– First place prize – €1,500 to the team
– Second place prize – €1,000 to the team
– Third place prize – €500 to the team

Award for best use of CSO data Awarded at BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2017. This award is for the most innovative use, or potential use, of CSO data. Be it in statistical analyses, statistical processes or statistical outputs, be they scientific or mathematical, a piece of research, a visualisation or a data map, the development of a device, a software application or the use of CSO data in any other innovative way.
